Scorebook Live’s Dan Dickau visits with Malachy Caffrey, junior at West Valley High School in Yakima, Washington.
How would you describe your game?
I am a good 3 point shooter who is able to create my own shot off the dribble. I am good at getting by my defender and making things happen based on the second level of defense whether it’s getting by and finishing or finding an open teammate for an easy bucket.
What are your goals for this season both individually and as a team?
Team: My goal for this team is to make it to the state tournament by winning the Big 9 Districts Championship and finishing first in the regular season.
Individually: Make first team All-League and first team All-Defense. My biggest goal is to go for MVP of the Big 9 League.
Who is your favorite player?
My favorite player to watch in the NBA is Giannis Antetokounmpo.
How would you describe your coach?
My coach, Jon Kinloch, is a good coach because he has the perfect balance of calling plays and letting his guys create. He is motivational when he needs to be and strict when he needs to be. He has done a great job installing our new defense this year and I look forward to finishing out my high school basketball with him.
Who is the toughest matchup this season and why?
I think Wenatchee is our toughest matchup this season because they are known for their solid pack line defense and in order to beat them we have to make some shots and then be solid on the defensive end. I look forward to both matchups.
What is your favorite gym in the state to play in?
My favorite gym in the state to play in is my own West Valley Gym, especially when we get to play in front of a big student section. It’s great to be able to feed off that energy at home.
What are your aspirations as a player?
My biggest basketball goal is to try and play college basketball at the Division 1 level.
