Brandon Roy, who compiled a 57-1 record over two seasons as head boys basketball coach at Garfield and Nathan Hale, will return to Garfield for the 2019-2020 season, according to a report from the Seattle Times.
Roy stepped away from coaching this past season after leading Garfield to the 2018 Washington 3A boys basketball title. Most of Garfield’s roster transferred after Roy left, including Tari Eason (Federal Way), Marjon Beauchamp (Rainier Beach) and Jamon Kemp (Rainier Beach).
Roy, 34, was a standout guard for the University of Washington and the Portland Trail Blazers. A three-time NBA All-Star, Roy was forced to retire in 2013 at the age of 28 because of chronic knee issues.
