Franklin’s Maurice Barnett scores 33 points to lead 3A all-stars to 127-100 win over 4A in WIBCA all-state game

Being at Franklin High School, Maurice Barnett has not been as fortunate as some of his Metro League counterparts in playing on the big stage. His school never reached the Class 3A state championships in the Tacoma Dome during his career.

But Barnett showed what those crowds were missing – rim-rattling dunks and eye-popping shooting range.

The Quakers’ standout had five dunks and five 3-pointers, and poured in a game-high 33 points off the bench in leading the 3A all-stars to a 127-100 victory Saturday night over the 4A squad at the annual WIBCA all-state game at Curtis High School in University Place.

Afterward, Barnett admitted his frustration over never making it to the state tournament, but added his outing Saturday took a little bit of his anguish away.

“Against a talented cast tonight, I came out on top, and showed what kind of player I am,” Barnett said.

The 6-foot-4 guard who is headed to College of Southern Idaho got to the rim at will, flushing one-handed jam after another.

But at the end of the first half, he went off from deep 3-point range.

The first one was right over the top of one of 4A’s top players – Skyview’s Alex Schumacher, who led his team with 23 points.

“When he pulled the first one right in my face, I was like, ‘OK, we will see,’” Schumacher said. “Then he hit a few more, and I knew he was a good shooter.”

Barnett hit a second one, then got a steal and went the other way.

The final of three 3-pointers in a 40-second span was way behind the arc. It went swish, and gave the 3A team a 62-40 lead with 30 seconds remaining.

In all, the 3A squad sank 21 3-pointers for the game, and finished shooting 54.2 percent from the floor (52 of 96).

“All star games are for offense,” said 4A coach Tim Kelly, who was in his own gymnasium at Curtis on Saturday night.
